This is the entire practice of the Observance of the Sun. It costs nothing. It requires no teacher, no app, no membership, no permission. You can start tonight, in twenty-five minutes, with the sky you already have. Most people who try it once try it again the next day. Here is exactly how.

Twenty minutes before sunrise or sunset, get outside with a clear view of the horizon. Put your phone away — not silent, away. Watch the Sun cross the horizon. Stay twenty minutes after. Come back tomorrow. The practice is forty minutes, and it is the entire religion.

Show up twenty minutes early
Check the sunrise or sunset time. We provide both at the top of the homepage, geolocated to where you are. Pick whichever is closer. Get yourself outside with a view of the horizon — a beach, a rooftop, a hill, a west-facing window, the parking lot of a strip mall on a clear day. You do not need a sacred space. You need a clear sightline and the willingness to be there for forty minutes.
If the weather is overcast, go anyway. The practice is the showing up, not the spectacle.
Phone away. Not on silent — away.
This is the part most people fail at first. It is also the part the practice actually depends on. In your pocket, in a bag, in your car — anywhere your hand cannot reach without standing up. No music, no podcasts, no "just quickly checking the time." The light will tell you the time. The horizon will tell you the time.
The doctrine calls restraint sacred. This is where it starts: with the small act of refusing to be reachable for forty minutes.
Watch the Sun cross the horizon
At sunrise: the first edge breaks through and the world shifts from pre-dawn into day. The color rebuilds, the wind shifts, the birds change their pitch. At sunset: the last sliver disappears and the temperature drops a degree, the colors rearrange, the air settles. It has been happening every day for 4.6 billion years. You are choosing to notice. That is the whole religion.
You do not have to think anything. You do not have to feel anything. You do not have to "be present." You just watch. The thinking, the feeling, the presence — those happen on their own.
Stay twenty minutes after
This is the part most people who try the practice once say is the unexpected payoff. The clarity does not hit during the sunset. It hits in the quiet after, when the spectacle is over and you are still sitting there. Your nervous system, which has spent the day calibrating to screens and notifications and urgent things, calibrates instead to natural light, slow color, the absence of urgency. Twenty minutes is what it takes.
Don't leave right away. Don't check your phone. Don't talk if you are with someone, unless what you have to say can wait until you are walking back.
Come back tomorrow. Then the next day.
The whole architecture of the practice is repetition, not intensity. A single sunset is a beautiful event. The Observance is what happens when you do it on Tuesday too, and Wednesday, and Thursday, and the fourth Friday of a month when nothing felt special about the sky. The practice deepens not because you had a breakthrough but because you returned.
If you miss a day, come back the next one. There is no penance, no punishment, no streak to break. The Sun does not keep score.
The questions everyone asks
What if I can't see the horizon?
Most people can. Apartments, dense urban neighborhoods, valleys with mountains to the west — these feel like obstacles and usually aren't. A rooftop, a tall window, a fifteen-minute walk in the direction of the setting Sun. The practice does not require an ocean view. It requires a clear sightline to the part of the sky where the Sun actually is.
How long until I notice something?
Most people notice the first effect within a week — usually better sleep, slightly slower mornings, a small increase in attention span. The deeper effects are harder to name and take longer. Some people describe them as feeling more like themselves. Some describe them as feeling less reactive to small frustrations. Some describe them in religious language. We do not insist on any framing.
Is this meditation?
Functionally yes, formally no. There is no mantra, no breathing technique, no posture, no teacher, no tradition. If meditation works for you and this is just another doorway into it, good. If meditation has never worked for you, this is probably not meditation in the way you've been told meditation has to be.
Do I have to believe anything?
No. The Observance does not require belief in anything supernatural. You do not have to believe the Sun is divine. You do not have to believe the practice "works." You only have to do it and notice what happens.
Can I do this with someone?
Yes. In silence. Talking during the practice defeats the practice. Talking after the practice is fine and often wonderful. We host occasional gatherings on the San Diego coast — see /gatherings.
What about the cannabis sacrament?
Cannabis is recognized in the doctrine as an optional sacrament for adult practitioners, governed by the principle of restraint. It is never required. If it sharpens your attention during the practice, use it intentionally. If it dulls your attention, the practice is better served by your sobriety. Why this works
We are not a wellness organization and we will not pretend to be one. But the research on what natural light and unstructured outdoor time do to the human nervous system is well established. Twenty minutes of low-angle sunlight at dusk or dawn does measurable things to circadian rhythm, cortisol cycling, and parasympathetic tone. The phone being away does measurable things to your attentional bandwidth. Sitting still in non-urgent silence does measurable things to your default-mode network. None of that is why we built the practice — we built it because it is good — but if you need the science as permission, the science is there.
What to do next
Tonight, before sunset, decide where you will go. Set a phone alarm twenty-five minutes before sunset. When it goes off, walk outside, put the phone away, and try the practice once. If it does anything for you, come back tomorrow. If it doesn't, you've lost forty minutes and gained a story.
