Gatherings on the coast.

The Observance is building a small, distributed network of free, open-air gathering places on the San Diego coast — borrowed yards, rooftops, terraces, and bluffs where small groups can sit together in silence at sunrise or sunset. We do not own property. We do not buy property. We practice the discipline of borrowed quiet.

Where

The corridor we are focused on first runs from La Jolla north through Del Mar, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, and Encinitas. Anywhere along that coast with a west-facing horizon and an honest amount of quiet is a candidate. We are not picky about square footage. We are picky about the absence of noise.

If you are trying to figure out which town makes the most sense for your own practice before you ever attend a gathering, start with sunset meditation in San Diego and then go narrower by town.

What a gathering looks like

Eight to twenty people. A loaner space — a yard, a rooftop, a deck, a bluff. Twenty minutes before the sunset, everyone arrives and finds a place to sit. Phones go away. We watch. Twenty minutes after, anyone who wants to talk does. Anyone who wants to leave does. There is no liturgy, no introduction, no leader at the front, no pass-the-plate. It is the practice, in company.

If you have a space to lend

If you own or have access to coastal property on the San Diego coast and would consider opening it for an occasional sunset gathering — even once — we'd love to hear from you. The ideal space is something you already own and do not always use: a vacation home between tenants, an unrented Airbnb, a terrace, a rooftop, a stretch of bluff that belongs to someone on paper and to no one in practice. We bring the people. You bring the quiet square foot of coast.

If you'd like to attend a gathering

We don't yet have a public calendar. The most reliable way to find out about a coming gathering is to follow @observanceofthesunchurch on Instagram, or email bobby@trainingties.com with the subject line "Gatherings — let me know" and we will add you to a small, low-volume list that goes out a few days before each event.

Start local first

If you are not ready for a gathering and just want a San Diego coast entry point, begin with sunset meditation in San Diego, or the specific town pages for Encinitas, Cardiff, Del Mar, Solana Beach, La Jolla, and Carlsbad.

The principle

We could buy a piece of coast. We could build a building. We don't, because the practice does not require either — and because borrowed quiet, returned gently, is a more honest model for a religion whose entire doctrine is restraint. We do not need a temple. We need an hour, a horizon, and a few people who will sit through it together.
