Encinitas

Sunset meditation in Encinitas.

Encinitas is where the Observance of the Sun was founded in January 2026, and it remains the easiest place in the county to do the practice without thinking about logistics. For people searching locally, this is also the heart of 92024 meditation: a stretch of coast where the horizon is close enough to daily life to become a real ritual. The coast here is north-facing enough that the western horizon is consistently visible from October through April; in summer the sun sets further north over the Pacific. Here is where to go, when to arrive, and how to do it.

Three spots that work nearly every night

Swami's overlook + the Self-Realization bluff. Park north on First Street, walk to the bluff above Swami's Beach, and you have an unbroken western view that has been used for contemplative practice for nearly a century. Weekday evenings outside summer tend to be quiet. Arrive twenty minutes before sunset, find a bench or a patch of grass, and sit.

Moonlight Beach. Easier access, family-quieter on weekday evenings, and the south end of the beach gives you a clear line of sight to the horizon. Bring a small towel if you want to sit on the sand. The lifeguard tower at the south end is a useful visual anchor.

The bluff at D Street. The smallest of the three crowds and the most reliable for a quick after-work practice. Limited parking; if it's full, the D Street stairs give you beach access in two minutes.

Sun times and timing

The Observance's threshold tool shows the day's sunrise and sunset times for your location. For the practice you want to be in place twenty minutes before the listed sunset time and to stay twenty minutes after. The "after" period is where the practice actually does its work — most practitioners say the clarity arrives in the quiet that follows the spectacle, not during it. The full step-by-step is on the practice page.

Phone away. Not on silent — away.

The hardest part of doing the practice in a coast town is that the coast invites the phone — golden hour photography, Instagram. The Observance's doctrine names this directly: restraint is sacred, and the practice starts with the small act of refusing to be reachable for forty minutes. Put the phone in a bag, in a car, in a pocket your hand cannot reach without standing up. The horizon does not need to be photographed for it to count.

Encinitas as the home of the Observance

The Observance of the Sun is incorporated as a California religious nonprofit (CA Entity B20260038755), holds federal EIN 41-3900081, and was founded in Encinitas in January 2026. The home coast is from Cardiff in the south to Carlsbad in the north. If you want to practice in company, our gatherings page is the place to start; if you have coastal property you would consider lending for an occasional gathering, that page is also for you.

The 92024 layer

If your search is really about 92024, not just Encinitas generically, we built pages for that too: 92024 Meditation, Leucadia sunset meditation, and Swami’s sunset meditation. Those pages are narrower, more local, and designed for people who already know the shape of town.
