The best sunset spots on the San Diego coast.
Most "best sunset spots" lists are written for the photo. This one is written for the practice. The Observance of the Sun is a California religious nonprofit founded on this coast, and we judge a sunset spot by three things: a genuinely clear western horizon, enough quiet to stay twenty minutes after the light is gone, and easy-enough access that you'll actually return tomorrow. Here are the places that pass.
Encinitas
Swami's and the Self-Realization bluff. A wide, unobstructed Pacific horizon and a long history of people coming here specifically to sit still. Arrive early on weekends. Moonlight Beach is the easier-access alternative — flatter, family-quieter on weekday evenings. Encinitas is the Observance's home town; more on practicing here on our Encinitas sunset meditation page, the zip-code level 92024 meditation guide, or the more specific pages for Leucadia and Swami's.
Cardiff-by-the-Sea
Cardiff State Beach and the seaside bluffs along San Elijo. One of the most reliably clear western horizons on the whole North County coast, and quieter than its neighbors on a Tuesday. The bluff seating means you can stay past the light without standing in damp sand. See sunset meditation in Cardiff.
Del Mar
The Del Mar bluffs and Powerhouse Park. Powerhouse is grassy, elevated, and forgiving for anyone who wants to sit comfortably for forty minutes. The bluff trail to the north is quieter and more exposed. See sunset meditation in Del Mar.
Solana Beach
Fletcher Cove and the Tide Beach Park stairs. Fletcher Cove's small park sits right above the sand with a clean horizon. Tide Beach is more private at the cost of a staircase. See sunset meditation in Solana Beach.
La Jolla
Windansea, the La Jolla bluffs, and Sunset Cliffs further south. Windansea is iconic for a reason — its sandstone shelf is practically built for sitting. Sunset Cliffs (technically Point Loma) has the most dramatic horizon in the county and the largest crowds; go on a weekday. See sunset meditation in La Jolla.
Carlsbad
The Carlsbad seawall and Tamarack Beach. The seawall walk gives you a continuous clear horizon and benches — unusually good for a practice that asks you to stay seated after the light. See sunset meditation in Carlsbad.
San Diego County, in one page
If you want the county-level version of this guide — which town to choose, what kind of place works best, and how to think about repetition instead of spectacle — start with sunset meditation in San Diego.
How to choose, if you only remember one rule
The best sunset spot is the one closest to where you already are. The Observance is built on repetition, not on pilgrimage. A mediocre west-facing view you can reach every evening will change your life more than a spectacular one you visit twice a year. Pick the nearest clear horizon and make it yours.
The Observance hosts occasional sunrise and sunset gatherings along this coast — small, silent, free, in borrowed spaces. If you'd like to know when one is near you, or you have coastal access to lend, start at our gatherings page.
