A useful sunset guide should tell you more than which view photographs well. Parking, restrooms, accessibility, closures, crowds, and the walk back after dark all matter.
Six places with different strengths
Sunset Cliffs Natural Park
Best for: the classic ocean-horizon sunset. The City of San Diego specifically identifies Ladera Street, Luscomb Point, and Osprey as sunset-viewing areas. Nearby streets and small lots provide parking; the City lists no restrooms at these specific viewing areas.
Swami's Beach, Encinitas
Best for: an elevated North County coast with facilities. The City lists restrooms, a parking lot with ADA spaces, and picnic facilities. The bluff-top setting can be enough; the practice never requires going down to the sand.
Moonlight Beach & Overlook
Best for: facilities and easier access. Moonlight Beach has restrooms, showers, parking, and accessible features. The separate Moonlight Beach Overlook is listed as accessible and open dawn to dusk.
J Street Viewpoint, Encinitas
Best for: a simple bluff-top observation without beach access. The City lists picnic facilities, on-street parking, and no restrooms.
Beacon's Beach, Encinitas
Best for: North County beach access. The City lists a parking lot with ADA spaces and no restrooms. The bluff path itself is not an accessible beach route; Moonlight Beach is the better accessible-beach alternative.
Torrey Pines State Beach
Best for: a broad coastline south of North County. The State Beach remains open during the 2026–27 closure of the adjacent State Natural Reserve. State Parks warns visitors to stay away from the base of cliffs because collapses can occur without notice.
Current advisory — September 21, 2026. California State Parks says Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve closes to all visitors beginning September 22 for construction. Torrey Pines State Beach and its North and South beach lots remain open. Recheck before travel.
