Sunset meditation in Cardiff.
Cardiff-by-the-Sea sits between Encinitas and Solana Beach on the north end of San Elijo, with one of the most reliably clear western horizons on the entire San Diego coast and bluff seating that makes the twenty-minutes-after part of the practice physically comfortable. If you live anywhere from Carlsbad to Del Mar, Cardiff is a defensible candidate for becoming your spot.
Where to go
The San Elijo bluffs. The bluff trail north of Cardiff State Beach gives you uninterrupted ocean views and benches at intervals. Weekday evenings are quiet; weekends bring a steady but small crowd. Park along Old Highway 101 or at Seaside Beach Park.
Cardiff State Beach. The southern stretch of the beach is more reliably empty than the campground end. If you don't mind sitting on sand, the unobstructed horizon here is hard to beat.
The lifeguard tower bluff at George's Restaurant. A short walk up from 101 puts you on a small bluff with the best west-facing seating in the immediate downtown. Limited parking; the side streets fill quickly in summer.
Timing
For the practice: in place twenty minutes before sunset, stay twenty minutes after. The threshold tool shows tonight's sunset time for your location. The Observance's full practice is at /practice/ — a two-minute read.
What makes Cardiff work
The thing Cardiff has that the other coast towns mostly don't is bluff seating with reliable horizon. The "after" portion of the practice — where the actual nervous-system reset happens — is the part most people undersell. Twenty minutes on damp sand after the spectacle is a less honest twenty minutes than twenty minutes on a wooden bench. Cardiff has more such benches per mile than anywhere else on the North County coast.
What to know before you go
Cardiff gets windier than Encinitas and usually cools down faster once the sun is gone, especially on the bluff line. Bring one more layer than you think you need if you plan to stay for the full post-sunset twenty minutes. Parking is easiest on weekday evenings; summer weekends around restaurant hours can turn a five-minute arrival into a fifteen-minute wander.
If you are noise-sensitive, avoid the heart of the restaurant strip and push either north toward the bluffs or south toward the quieter beach edge. The best version of the practice is not the most photogenic one. It is the one where you can stay still without negotiating with traffic, music, or your own impatience.
Cardiff's place in the Observance
The Observance of the Sun was founded in Encinitas in January 2026, the town immediately to the north. Our coastal corridor of focus runs from La Jolla in the south up through Del Mar, Cardiff, Encinitas, and Carlsbad. If you have property on the Cardiff coast you would consider lending for an occasional sunrise or sunset gathering, the gatherings page is the place to start. Practice is always free.
